FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make a complaint about my electricity service?

Contact your provider (usually Tonga Power Limited) first and ask for a reference number — most issues are resolved quickly at that level. If it remains unresolved, or involves a safety or regulatory concern, use our Contact page and select "Complaint" as the submission type.

How are electricity tariffs set in Tonga?

Under the Energy Act 2021, the Commission reviews and approves electricity tariffs, taking into account fuel costs, efficiency standards and affordability for consumers. Tariffs are reviewed regularly — for example, on a quarterly basis for movements in diesel prices.

What is the Energy Act 2021?

The Energy Act 2021 is Tonga's first comprehensive energy law. Enacted 26 August 2021 and given Royal Assent on 22 November 2021, it established the Tonga Energy Commission and extended regulation beyond electricity to petroleum, gas and renewable energy.

Does the Commission regulate petroleum and gas too?

Yes. The Energy Act 2021 broadened the Commission's mandate beyond electricity to include the importation, storage, distribution and safety of petroleum and gas products.

What is Tonga's renewable energy target?

The Government of Tonga has committed to reaching 70% renewable electricity generation by 2030, a target the Commission supports through its regulatory work.

How do I become a licensed electrician?

The Commission licenses electricians and sets electrical safety standards under the Energy Act 2021. Contact the Commission directly for current licensing requirements and the application process.
